PHILOSOPHY
The Riverside School is dedicated to the ideal that
children be involved and enthusiastic participants in their education.
We nurture and encourage curiosity, creativity, and individuality,
and we instill in students an appreciation for hard work. We believe
that children can learn to be strong and effective leaders, and
we are committed to developing in our students the skills necessary
to take on leadership roles. We believe that students must
be aware of and be active in the broader world around them in
order to become ethical and compassionate members of society.
Support for our students' growth as learners, leaders, and citizens
must come from every element of the Riverside community, both
in and out of the classroom; therefore, we value and rely on the
deep involvement of parents, faculty, staff, and administration
in the development of our students.
HIGH SCHOOL ACHIEVEMENT - Local high school teachers
comment that they can pick out the students who went to Riverside
in their classrooms; Riversiders demonstrate sincere engagement
in lessons, strong social and group work skills, and academic
success. We have had 168 graduates since 1991, mostly attending
Lyndon Institute and St. Johnsbury Academy.

NEW ENGLAND COMMON ASSESSMENT - Each fall the New
England Common Assessment Program (NECAP) test is administered
to students in grades 3 through 8. The NECAP measures student
performance on grade level expectations (GLE's) as identified
by the State of Vermont. It is a goal of The Riverside School
to prepare our students to meet, and ideally exceed, the expectations.
Statewide, reading and mathematics are assessed at every grade
level, while writing is assessed in grades 5 and 8 only. Student
performance on the NECAP tests is classified into one of four
achievement levels describing students' level of proficiency on
the content and skills required through the end of the previous
grade. The achievement levels are:
4 = Proficient with Distinction
3 = Proficient
2 = Partially Proficient
1 = Substantially Below Proficient
The table below reports the 2010 results for The Riverside School,
and for comparison purposes, the state of Vermont. The writing
results reported for the state are the Grade 8 results. The Grade
5 state results were lower (12% at Level 4, 38% at Level 3, and
a combined 50% for Levels 3 and 4).
