Roy Starling, BA, MA
Florida State University
Roy Starling is a true Renaissance man: a scholar, an athlete, and a teacher. He brings to Riverside a lifelong love of Greek and Roman mythology, which he shares with his students through masterful retellings. Before coming to Riverside, Roy taught for many years at Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy in Melbourne, FL.
His impact on his students was profound. 50% of his AP Latin students went on to major in Latin or classics in college, and he grew the Latin Club into the largest academic club in the school. He led and chaperoned three student trips to Europe and brought his students annually to Florida’s State Latin Forum. Roy’s energy and enthusiasm are infectious. It is not unusual to find him deeply engaged in impromptu football or four-square games or involved in telling stories to rapt students about his experiences and passions.
Roy earned both his B.A. and M.A. in Greek and Latin from Florida State University. In addition to his love of the subjects he teaches, Roy enjoys many sports, including running, sailing, triathlons, surfing, and fishing. His greatest pleasure, however, comes from exerting a positive influence on his students, both in the classroom and out of it. He lives in Kirby with his wife and two sons, both students at Riverside.
