Nancy Phillips, BS, MS
Kansas State University
Arizona State
Riverside fourth and fifth graders can often be found with Nancy tromping through the woods and fields or digging in the gardens learning about local animals, earthworms, bees, medicinal herbs and edible plants.
Nancy is an amateur naturalist, professional herbalist, and published
author as well as a certified elementary and special education
teacher. She shares her love of health and nature by incorporating
cooking, gardening, hiking and exploring Vermont's natural landscape
into the K-1 curriculum. Nancy is inspired by the natural curiosities
of our youngest students and wants to foster their passion for
discovery and learning.
Nancy has a great love of history, literature and ecology and is a firm believer that kids learn best by doing. Her students frequently perform skits and plays and are almost always in the midst of some project from building their own medieval castles to crafting African masks. Her weaving of the arts into science and history units adds depth and fun!
Nancy graduated from Kansas State University with a Bachelor of Science degree. She did Masters Work at Arizona State and taught in a variety of public and private settings for over fifteen years before joining The Riverside faculty in 2005. Nancy recently moved to St. Johnsbury but also owns an organic farm with her husband Michael, and her daughter Gracie, a 2009 Riverside graduate.
