MATHEMATICS
It is the goal of the mathematics department to offer a curriculum which focuses on mathematical power versus isolated skills, the science of patterns versus arbitrary rules, and contextual problem solving versus drill. This is not to imply that computational skills are unimportant, but rather that understanding of how the skills are connected and why the algorithms work is essential.
An end goal is for all eighth graders to study a full year of Algebra I. The majority of Riverside students attend St. Johnsbury Academy or Lyndon Institute as freshmen and therefore the Riverside Algebra I syllabus serves to prepare students for either program.
In order to achieve the goal of all students in grade 8 Algebra I, it is necessary to design grade level outcomes that are not duplicated in consecutive years. Acceleration of content occurs in grades 3 and 4, enabled in part by the small class size, and considerably more contact time for mathematics than in most elementary programs.
